How many balusters do I need?
Building code requires gaps under 4". Most stairs use 2 balusters per tread, or 3 for a tighter look.
Balcony runs use about 3 balusters per foot. Order 1–2 extra for cutting mistakes.
Hollow vs. solid
Hollow (lightweight) balusters cost less and are easier to cut and install. Solid bars feel heavier and suit high-traffic or commercial stairs. Both look the same once installed.
Pick your bar size
1/2" is the most common and fits most homes. 9/16" and 5/8" look a bit fuller. 3/4" "Mega" bars make a bold modern statement. Keep one size throughout your staircase.
Choosing a finish
Satin Black is our best seller and matches almost any décor. Oil Rubbed Bronze and Copper add warmth with wood treads. Ash Gray suits light, coastal and modern interiors.
Mix for a custom look
Alternate a plain bar with a twist, knuckle or basket every other spot. It's an easy way to get a designer look on a budget.
Questions homeowners ask
How fast will my order arrive?
Fast delivery on most items, next or same day* on popular balusters. Delivery is free on orders $99+ to NJ, NY, PA, CT and DE.
*Select items such as standard-size treads and common balusters. Call (609) 480-8148 for lead times.
Can I replace my wood balusters with iron myself?
Yes. It's one of the most popular DIY upgrades. You'll cut out the old spindles, drill the handrail and treads, set each iron baluster with a base shoe and epoxy. Call us with any fit or sizing question.
What do I need besides balusters?
Base shoes (one per baluster), epoxy or construction adhesive, and a few set screws. We carry all of it, so you can get everything in one order.
Can I return extra balusters?
Yes. Unused items can be returned with a 20% restocking fee. Special-order and custom items are final sale.
