- Plan the newel location and height so the handrail meets it at the correct height (usually 34"–38" on stairs).
- Cut the newel to length if needed.
- Secure it with a newel mounting kit or lag bolts into solid framing. It must not wobble.
- Attach the handrail with a rail bolt or bracket, then fill and finish the holes.
