- Remove the old tread or carpet and check the stringers are level and solid.
- Measure each step individually; stairs are rarely perfectly square.
- Cut the tread to width and length, dry-fit, then glue with construction adhesive.
- Fasten with finish nails or screws (plug the holes), then stain and seal.
